Beth Gibbeson contemporary Australian painter standing with her abstract landscape paintings in a gallery exhibition Surface to Air at Saint Cloche Gallery

Exhibition photo by Alexander Cooke

Beth Gibbeson is a contemporary Australian painter known for her luminous abstract landscape paintings and finely layered colour gradients. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her paintings explore the interplay of colour, light and memory, creating atmospheric compositions that evoke shifting landscapes and emotional resonance.

Based in Melbourne, Gibbeson works from her studio developing contemporary abstract paintings that reflect both place and experience. Her work draws on memories of diverse environments and the way landscapes are felt, remembered and transformed through time.

Gibbeson completed a Bachelor and Honours Degree in Fine Arts (Painting) at RMIT University, Melbourne.

She spent her early childhood in Sale, Gippsland, before living in Cairo, Egypt during her teenage years. Later she lived in Castlemaine, Victoria, where she raised her family. The contrast between these environments—regional Australia, the intensity of Cairo, and the vast landscapes of Castlemaine and surrounds—continues to influence the atmosphere and spatial qualities within her paintings.

‘I have long been drawn to the dialogue between past and present, where memory and experience continually re-emerge and evolve. Through the physical force of paint and process, I build illusionistic spaces that invite the viewer to be absorbed within them.’

Since returning to her practice, Gibbeson has exhibited regularly in both solo and group exhibitions. Her paintings are held in numerous private collections throughout Australia and internationally.
